Birth Rate In Russia Falls To 25-Year Low

The demographic situation is worsening despite the authorities' campaign against abortion.

Russia's birth rate has fallen to its lowest level in 25 years. In the first six months of 2024, 599.6 thousand children were born in Russia, 16 thousand fewer than in the same period of the previous year, Deutsche Welle reported on Wednesday, September 10, citing Reuters and Rosstat data. The figure is the lowest since 1999.

At the same time, the number of newborns fell 6 per cent year-on-year to 98.6 thousand in June, the first time the monthly birth rate has fallen below the 100,000 mark, it further noted.

Russia's natural population decline has also accelerated this year due to rising mortality rates. From January to June, 325.1 thousand people died in Russia, 49 thousand more than in the first six months of 2023.

The demographic situation in Russia continues to deteriorate against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine. The Russian authorities are trying to change the situation, in particular, by campaigning against abortion.
